Celebrate Earth Day!
When living in an apartment, going green can be challenging.
Rockliffe Residences wants to remind residents that going green doesn't have to be difficult and won't interrupt your current lifestyle. We have a few tips that will help you reduce your environmental footprint.
For renters who have utilities included with rent, it can be tempting to overuse your consumption. You might not feel like your extra 5 minutes in the shower is making a big difference, but imagine if all building residents did the same thing everyday! Time your showers reasonably and turn off the tap when you're not directly using it. Wash your dishes/run a dishwasher only when a full load is ready. Turn lights off when you're not in the room and allow natural sunlight into your space instead of using up hydro energy. If you plan to go away for a substantial amount of time, unplug your heavier use electronics like your tv.
We all know plastics are a menace to our environment. You can reduce water bottle water waste by investing in a household water cooler as an alternative to buying cases of water. Not only is this option cheaper for you, but our environment will thank you!
Reusing items is one of the easiest ways to go green. Keep your plastic shopping bags to reuse at the store or use them for garbage bags. Reuse butter, yogurt, or other food containers for leftovers, organizing art supplies, or as mini planters. Visit helpful DIY website like Pinterest, to find innovative ways to repurpose leftover/unwanted items and give them new life!
Stop Water Waste
Inform your superintendent immediately if you notice water waste. When the taps leak, pipes drip, or the toilet runs, you need to submit a maintenance request right away to avoid wasting water. In the meantime, place a clean container under a drippy tap to collect the water, then use it for cooking, watering plants, or washing dishes.
Decrease Your Carbon Footprint
When looking for an apartment, choose one that is close to all your daily needs: work, school, shopping, and entertainment. When you live close enough to walk, ride a bike, or use public transit, you can help the earth by eliminating unnecessary carbon emissions.
Keep a reusable bag or bin next to your trash can to collect all recyclables, then dispose it into your building's blue bins. If you're really enthusiastic, take your recyclables directly to the Halton Waste Management Site for free disposal.
Living in an apartment doesn't change your ability to go green. You can still make a difference even if you only make one change to your lifestyle. Below are a few easy things residents can do:
- Ensure all lightbulbs are CFL or LED
- Use power strips to easily unplug electronics when not in use
- Wear your clothing more than once before washing and always wash a full load
- Make your own natural cleaners using vinegar and baking soda or try these recipes.
